Alas, today was our trip to Bruges! I have always been interested in this city for its unique medieval architecture and quaint bridges and cobble stoned streets. Arriving and seeing the city was more pleasing than expected. The heat today was slightly overbearing, but by staying indoors in certain museums we were able to still enjoy what the city had to offer. It’s an interesting place because it feels almost like a town made for tourists, where locals no longer quite live. This could contribute to the fact that Bruges is a city of over 100 hotels and “ the more ambitious Bruggelingen leave for the bigger Flemish cities to study and never return.” (pg.87)
One of my most favorite visits was the double chapel built by Count Diederik from 1134-1157. The upper chapel was later renamed the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Apparently the Basilica holds the Holy Blood of Jesus Christ. “ According to legend, Count Diederik of Alsace brought the relic of the Holy Blood back from the Holy Land in 1150.” (pg.91) I’m not quite sure if this is a true relic, but it is definitely interesting to fathom. Even just knowing that the piece is from the 12th century and the crusades is very exciting. The actual chapel itself is my favorite out of all the chapels i’ve seen. The old wooden vaulted ceilings contrasted with the painted walls and vast amount of gold decorations is just mesmerizing. There was also a beautiful stained glass window that was almost glowing because of the sunlight and the darkness in the rest of the room.
Bruges was definitely a treat to visit. We also saw numerous works of art by Jan Van Eyck which was very special to see. His extreme detail on the human characters is incomparable. The Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele was what really captured my attention. The quality of work is just outstanding. The skin of the figures look realistic, and the lighting and coloration is quite perfect. I also really enjoyed seeing Michelangelo’s Mary with child statue. I have never see any of his work up close, so this was very meaningful. It is also a very special piece because it was the only work of art that was not in Italy during his time, very rare! I have to say Bruges is definitely my favorite city in all of Belgium!
